I need help.

Yes, it's true. Confession time is here. I'm intimidated by . . . Subway. You know, the sandwich shop? I get in there, and I order my sandwich, and then I never know what the heck to put on it. I feel so stupid! So, if I may be so bold to ask, what do your sandwiches wear?

Oh Sure. Say, I love DST, but I'm having trouble adjusting. Came home and slept from 8: - 11:15. Got up in time to see the end of the NCAA championship. Went back to bed at 1 and slept until 5:30 (usual waking time). Wonder if I'll make it through today without that awful three o'clock slump?

1. What shows would make up a perfect night of TV viewing for you? Oh, that's easy, the Thursday night CBS schedule is already perfect. Survivor, the original CSI (long may William Peterman live), and Without a Trace.


2. What show(s) would you cancel without a moment's hesitation? Everybody Loves Raymond. Because I don't. Love Raymond, that is. The rest of the cast is fine, but Raymond has to go.

3. Is there a show (previously cancelled or just no longer airing) that you'd bring back, original cast and all? No. You can't go home again.


~Bonus~ You get to create one show to put on the schedule, with any stars you choose. Who and what would it be? A ten-part mini-series on the flight of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce from Idaho to Montana, with Graham Greene as Joseph and some fading male star to play the part of Nelson Miles.

Susan on the other-side-of-the-world just went off DST. (She lives in Oz.) I think that means we're 14 hours apart instead of 16. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

All NCAA basketball roads lead to San Antonio: how's the traffic, Roscoe? And isn't there a premiere for The Alamo going on? Or was that last weekend? (And if you saw Dennis Quaid and didn't take a picture you are in BIG trouble!)

Well, I know what Susan in North Carolina is going to be doing this evening. Go Duke. (Now I have to walk around with a paper bag over my head all day so no one in Spartan country will recognize me. We're not supposed to say things like that. This is what I like about blogging. It brings peace and understanding to people of different basketball persuasions.)

And I have seedlings coming up! (This promises to be a wildly erratic post. Really, I'm not hungover.) And the seedlings are another reason I like blogging. I hadn't done them for a couple of years. I felt it was easier to just buy plants already grown for the dozen or so pots I have on my balcony. But michelle has written about planting seeds, not worrying about the proper timing, and tamping them down with her cane. And I was touched. And planted some seeds. (All right, you over in the left corner. I heard you whisper we knew she was touched, already! You're right.)

Lynn's asking for comments on comments. Always an interesting topic.

Bryn is turning into the queen of e-bay. Interesting purchases, my blogging buddy! And Isabella's entire post is in haiku today. Bravo!

Thinking about the Alamo: Billy Bob Thornton plays Davy Crockett? Only Fess Parker can play Davy Crockett in this other-side-of-an-age person's eyes, though I suspect I'll go see the movie for Dennis Quaid.

I think it was otto that mentioned that blogrolling.com seems to have lost some of its information. I'm seeing more and more times where the blogrolls aren't loading. That's fine if I'm home because I have all the bookmarks, but one of the points of a blogroll is that you can get to your favorites wherever you are. I'm seriously considering going back to hand-coding the list. Any thoughts?

Morning! Good week . . . fast week!

Tuesday was our Charity Day at work. The last Tuesday of the month is the day when the office staff dresses weird and brings in baked goods for a sale. We collect for a charity until we reach a certain amount, then we decide on another charity. We've given to organizations such as Rescue Mission, Animal Shelter, Diabetes Association, Make-A-Wish, Loaves and Fishes, Domestic Assault Council. This month we were collecting for the American Heart Association.

Elsie, our most senior member (let's just say she's on the other side of the Social Security birthday), often shies back a little from dressing oddly. However, this time she dived right into the project. She decided that as we are close to Easter, we could all be bunnies, and she brought in bunny ears from the dollar store. It was too funny to see six women all coordinated with furry little ears.

And it worked! Normally we collect between $40 and $60 each month. This month we hit a hundred!

Yesterday went very well, thank you all very much!

And I hope your Friday goes well today.

Sorry, got a little carried away with the "April Fool". But I really feel like one. We have about a dozen projects going at work today. End-of-month, Inventory, an Ad for the Parade of Homes book, a new mailing, the general work. Oh okay, so we have five projects going now. I find the adrenalin boost from multi-tasking crashes faster lately.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

I saw it Friday night. We based our choice primarily on the local review: it called it the first "good" movie of the new year. The IMDB boards show the same reaction. The screenplay is by Charlie Kaufman, he of the "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation" fame. (I have seen neither of these movies.) I'm not sure I would go the "best" movie route, but it was a fascinating look at relationships, memory, intimacy, and love.

The theaters are showing up to 7 trailers now, so I love when one strikes a spark. The trailer for Door In the Floor caught my eye. First, it stars Jeff Bridges. That would be enough, but it is also based on a section of A Widow for One Year, the John Irving book I recently finished (and which wholly captivated me with its cast of characters). So I'm marking my calendar now. June 23.

I Forgive…
We have all been wronged by someone, intentionally or otherwise. The wisest and strongest of us lets affronts slide off her like rain from her face. Most of us, however, hold onto at least some offenses and slights. Like leaves burnt on a Fall day, long after the upper thoughts have burnt to ash, some things beneath continue to simmer. Smoldering embers still produce quite a lot of heat. It’s time to stamp out at least one cinder. Forgive an affront. Forgive the person who made it. Forgive yourself. And thereby free yourself to make better use of the emotional energy fueling the ember.

Yikes. This slant hit home. I realize I am a grudge bearer, and that hurts only myself.

I'm going to make a list in my paper journal. I'm going to work on forgiving one person at a time. . . maybe one incident at a time. Whatever it takes. And then I'll try to forgive myself.

March in Michigan is a real pain in the neck. It doesn't matter whether it comes in like a lion or lamb, the weather is just all over the place. Before noon today we had rain, snow, fog, sunshine, wind, calm. It will go that way for 31 days. A lot of April will be that way. Our spring truly doesn't begin until May.

However, there is one saving grace of March in Michigan.

Maple Syrup.

Our company is displaying at another "Home and Garden Show" this weekend. This one is most fun as there are some gorgeous garden displays. I work Saturday morning.

Okay, project to work on while Survivor is on:

Auntie N is turning 80. We're giving her restaurant gift certificates that add up to . . . $80.00. And we're going to put them in a little lunch box that I have to decorate now, with something like "lunches for the '80s".

Totally unrelated: I had to change two lightbulbs tonight. Sure is much brighter now.

1. What is your solution for cabin fever - you know that feeling of being penned in the house all winter? Lots and lots of lights. Move my writing space directly in front of the window. Scrapbook pictures from summer to remind me it will come again.

2. Who are the people in your neighbourhood...in your neighbourhood, in your neighbourhood.....? I live in an apartment complex close to a Big 10 University, so my neighbors change a lot. Lots of students, young families, multi-nationals.

3. What's the best thing about spring? May. Most absolutely beautiful month in the world up here in Michigan.

4. Any Easter traditions? Easter is my favorite holiday for religious reasons. My senior year in high school Grandpa P. died right before Easter. The week after the funeral we were doing the Easter Play at church. Just seemed to bring it all right home. Yay for the Resurrection.

5. How old were you believing in the Easter bunny? Well, he's still sitting on my dresser, the poor old worn-out thing.

Whoops! Happy belated birthday to Onyx!

This past year was…
The Saturday Slant posted its first Slant on 9 March, 2003—this week one year ago. In honor of the one year anniversary of the Saturday Slant, tell your readers about your last year. What did you do? What do you wish you had done? What happened to you? What have you learned? How have you changed? Who came into, or left, your life?

I'm a little late on this slant . . . I'll blame it on the cold. What I did in the year from March 2003 to March 2004:

1. Worked.

2. Paid most of the bills.

3. Went to Montana. Most Montana trips include a brother and his family. This year it was my mother and myself hitting the trail, and they're still talking about those wild Michigan women out west. (mmmhmmm, right! Well, we did sign the guest book at the Lewis & Clark Center as Lil Lewis and Pearl Clark.) Seriously, it was quite an adventure playing up and down the front face of the Rockies. It became apparent that I MUST concentrate on improving my stamina and health before the next trip. So have I done that? Of course not. Note A to self: Take yourself seriously, idjit!

4. Hung out with family.

5. Worked.

6. Paid most of bills.

7. Participated in NaNoWriMo in November and completed a 50,000 word manuscript. This was a goal that was totally for me, that I kept at on a basically daily basis, and that I completed! There were some naysayers, but that was good as I got to tell those voices (figuratively) to take a hike. I enjoyed reading about Roscoe's, onyx's, and FerroLad's projects. And bryn kept us all on task throughout the month.

I've been blessed with having good writing buddies throughout my life. I've been less blessed that three of them have passed away. One of the benefits of NaNoWriMo was that JR's, JP's, and Linda's voices were also there. Writing is hard work. Writing and plotting and devising are also a great joy. I remembered.

The goal is 2004 is to rewrite the dang thing and submit until I get at least five rejections. I haven't started this yet, so later today, I take that project back up. It's for me.

8. Said good-bye to two guys. One was a friend from the past that I had connected again with via the internet. I now know that family is more important to me than money. I wish him the best, but until he realizes money really can't buy love, he may be in for a bumpy ride. (And neither of us is getting younger!)

The other guy was the "young-un". I couldn't get past our age difference. That was a mistake on my part. If I was trying to protect my heart, trying to protect being "left" it didn't work. What I've learned from this: sometimes it's better to say yes and possibly have regrets rather than say no and surely have regrets.

9. Been sick twice this year with a prolonged cold/flu. Note B to self. Take self seriously. Take HEALTH more seriously.

10. Worked. Note C to self: Work less.

11. Paid most bills.

12. Blogged. And that's a good thing.

The Michigan Barn Preservation Network 9th Annual Conference is this weekend at Michigan State University.

The barn pictured throughout the last week is my mother's barn. Mom grew up in the country, the only child of an only child. It was a lonely childhood so she created a different one for her kids. First, she had six kids! Second, we lived in the city in a small home on the south end. And of course we loved the times we could visit Grandma in the country . . . that's just how life is, isn't it!

Though Mom wouldn't return to the country, she loves the big old red barn. She reroofed it a few years back, rather than let the elements take it down. And while she won't be attending the conference this weekend, she is a member of the preservation network. She's an interesting lady.

Apparently I should do those while I'm healthy too????)

There's Light at the End of This Week's Tunnel!

I work for an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) company. The end of the month is usually a busy time for us, with statements and month end stuff to be completed. We try to have everything wrapped up by the fifth. This is a slow time of the year, so end-of-month shouldn't be a hassle. Of course, that would never do. So we add to the mix. We're in the throes of sending out a directed mailing to 200 customers a day. Plus, we're preparing for a Home Show that starts Friday . . . oh wait, that's today! Last Friday the boss says he wants some signs, but we'll have to meet about them Monday. Comes Monday, I remind him, but the meeting gets lost. So Wednesday afternoon we got to push the PhotoShop stuff. I'll find out today how the concepts look when they get back from the sign-makers.

And I'm sort of complaining here, but sort of not, because the joy of working at a "small business" is the diversity of projects with which you become involved. Still, I am glad that it is Friday. Hope your weekend holds fun plans. See ya!
